Remington Portable Nr:1. Made:1921.

A few times when searching for fun projects I stumbled on "too far gone" machines.
This I passed up the first time but really liked the looks with glass keys and sleek model.
But the condition was terrible...

All levers were stuck, rust and grime everywhere.

Could this be brought back being functional again ?

Sad looking Remington, that's for sure.

The case were included and intact, leather-strap
still there, lock even worked.

Started blowing all dust and grime away,
using compressed air and small brushes.
Then applied a mixture of automatic-
transmission fluid & rubbing alcohol,
on all moving parts, linkages, pivot points.
Covered the keys & platen properly first.
After the "healing solution" I let it sit,
for 24 hours before very carefully started,
moving levers around and see what part
needed more oil or cleaning.
Scrubbed and wiped grimy stuff outside
in the sunshine for good ventilation.

This was the attempt typing after a lot of cleaning,
and new ribbon installed.

I was very happy & surprised over the print quality,
this little machine can do.
A small lever on the right side lifts up basket &
keys, then a steady key tap and BANG, nice
black print, straight line all key-slugs scrubbed
several times of course.
